Local OB/GYN to Host Women’s Health Fair April 27th
(Gary, IND) Since the age of five, Dr. Maya Dominique, OB/GYN, knew she wanted to be a doctor. She has now taken her calling to higher heights as an advocate and voice for the women she treats, many of whom lack adequate health care.
One form of outreach is the inaugural Women’s Health Fair she is hosting in partnership with sponsor Northshore Health Centers. Free and open to the public, the event takes place Saturday, April 27, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater NWI, 2700 W. 19th Avenue in Gary.
“I am on a mission to raise awareness about the resources available to women when it comes to their health,” said Dominique. “Knowledge and access are key to a healthier community. I see so many women who are not accustomed to regular doctor visits and even more are unaware of the many opportunities that exist to take better care of themselves. This health fair is one way that we can begin to reverse this trend.”
The health fair will feature free health screenings, live cooking demonstrations, children’s entertainment, vendors, giveaways, raffles, free haircuts and more.
One area of concern that Dominique wants to amplify is the staggering rates of maternal morbidity and mortality in the Black community. The numbers in Lake County are among the highest in the state.
On Sunday, April 28, 2024 from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Dr. Dominique will join colleagues Karla Dominique, RN-BSN and Holley Bloomfield, LPC in an online conversation via zoom. The public is invited to visit womenshealthfair.splashthat.com to register, and learn more about both events.
“Whether they are my patients or not, I want all women to get the quality health care they deserve,” added Dominique. “It starts with advocacy and arming them with information and resources.”
